ARKEN
ARKEN Museum for Samtidskunst is more than a museum. It is a cultural meeting place where art, music, creativity and community come together, bringing new experiences and opportunities to people of all ages in Ishøj and across Denmark.
Located near the beautiful coastline of Ishøj Strand, just southwest of Copenhagen, ARKEN is one of Denmark’s most distinctive museums of modern and contemporary art. With its remarkable architecture, inspiring exhibitions and diverse cultural activities, ARKEN attracts visitors from Denmark and around the world.
A Cultural Landmark in Ishøj
ARKEN is internationally recognized for its impressive collection of contemporary art and its commitment to making art accessible to a wide audience.
The museum offers changing exhibitions, educational activities, guided experiences, workshops and cultural programs that encourage visitors to explore new ideas and artistic expressions.
Beyond its galleries, ARKEN has become an important gathering place for the surrounding communities of Ishøj, Vestegnen and Greater Copenhagen.
Music, Dance and Youth Culture at ARKEN
One of ARKEN’s exciting developments has been its growing involvement in music, dance and youth-oriented cultural activities.
Through collaborations with local artists, musicians, youth organizations and creative communities, the museum has provided opportunities for young people to develop their talents, meet other creative individuals and participate in artistic experiences.
Projects involving IshøjUngdom, Vestegnen All-Stars and young musicians from the Copenhagen area have helped connect contemporary art with modern music culture.
Activities have included music camps, songwriting workshops, music production, live performances and opportunities for young artists to present original material.
These initiatives demonstrate how museums can become active cultural spaces where young people are not simply visitors but contributors to the creative environment.
ARKEN Music Camp and Creative Collaborations
During 2025, ARKEN was connected with several youth music initiatives, including creative workshops, music camps and activities bringing together young performers and experienced artists.
The programs encouraged collaboration, artistic development and networking across musical genres and cultural backgrounds.
Participants explored songwriting, recording, stage performance and music production while building relationships with other young creatives.
The involvement of local artists and international music personalities helped create exciting opportunities for inspiration and artistic exchange.
ARKEN has also been part of the wider cultural experiences offered to young participants in IshøjUngdom’s Camp Flow 2026, connecting music and dance activities with the museum’s artistic environment.
ARKEN and the New Light Rail Connection
Accessibility to ARKEN and the surrounding coastal area has been strengthened by the development of Hovedstadens Letbane, Copenhagen’s new light rail system.
The Ishøj Strand – ARKEN station connects the area with the wider transport network along the western side of Copenhagen.
The station also features a distinctive public artwork called Betwixt, created by the artist group YEARS. Its nine granite monuments explore ideas of movement, transition and the spaces between different places and experiences.
This combination of public transportation, architecture and contemporary art creates a welcoming introduction to the cultural landscape surrounding ARKEN.
Explore ARKEN and Ishøj Strand in 360 Degrees
Nordic GPS has contributed to documenting the area through Google Street View photography and interactive 360-degree virtual mapping.
The project includes the Ishøj Strand – ARKEN light rail station and its surroundings, helping visitors explore the location digitally and become familiar with the area before arriving.
These virtual experiences support tourism, accessibility and the promotion of important cultural destinations throughout Ishøj and Vestegnen.

A Place for Art, Community and Future Generations
ARKEN continues to represent an important part of the cultural identity of Ishøj and the western Copenhagen region.
By combining world-class contemporary art with educational programs, community engagement and opportunities for young creatives, the museum demonstrates the value of making culture accessible to everyone.
For visitors interested in art, music, architecture, nature or discovering new experiences, ARKEN and its surrounding coastal environment offer a unique destination.
ARKEN is not only a place to experience art. It is a place where creativity, culture and community can inspire the next generation.
